#FAIL, says new report from Canada’s environment watchdog

OTTAWA - The Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development provides further evidence the federal government is failing to protect the environment, ^NOT meeting its climate change commitments and ^NOT cleaning up contaminated sites.

The reality is Canada will ^NOT meet its 2020 greenhouse gas emission target of 17% below 2005 emissions (it won’t come close with the current rate of expansion of the Tar Sands). Nor is there a plan (or the funding allocated) to clean-up thousands of toxic waste sites. Only a handful of contaminated sites out of over 10,000 are reported to be receiving adequate attention.
700 Environment Canada jobs on the chopping block

Meteorologists, scientists, chemists and engineers are among more than 700 Environment Canada employees on the chopping block as the department launches sweeping cuts to cope with federal belt-tightening.

The shakeup could be a taste of further cuts in other departments to come as the Conservative government reins in spending to eliminate a $32 billion deficit.

The cuts represent 11 per cent of the workforce at Environment Canada, calling into question the department’s ability to carry on its mandate, said Bill Pynn, national president of the Union of Environment Workers, which represents 476 of the affected workers.

“It’s massive,” Pynn said, saying he can’t recall cuts of a similar scale in Ottawa in the last two decades.

Communities form an Alliance against Shale Gas

Fredericton - Community groups from across the province have formed a network committed to working together to putting an end to shale gas development plans in the province.

A groundswell of community opposition has arisen in response to the threats to public health, the environment, the economy, and the fundamental way of life for New Brunswickers posed by the provincial government’s plans to expedite shale gas exploration.
Mega quarry application rejected by government

The proposed mine in Melanchton is nowhere near to becoming a reality. Ministry of the Environment officials stated it is their position that the documents submitted by the quarry proponents failed to demonstrate a three dimensional understanding of the geology, hydrogeology and hydrology of the site.

Among the reasons for the position they took, MOE staff cited:

Ottawa (20 Oct. 2011) - The Canadian Environmental Network (RCEN) received notice last week that it would not receive $547,000 in core funding that the government had previously said it intended to provide.

The RCEN has existed for more than three decades and includes more than 600 member organizations from across Canada. It provides valuable networking opportunities for grassroots organizations to share knowledge and strategies across this vast country.

Olivier Kolmel, the chairman of the organization's board of directors, said Ottawa did not give any warning that it would cut off its funding next year.

RCEN helps groups move their issues forward and to the attention of lawmakers at all levels of government.
