  • Environment Canada cuts put public at risk, critics say

    OTTAWA—Deep cuts at Environment Canada could put public safety at risk from freak weather events and the impacts of climate change, critics warn.

    News that scientists, meteorologists and engineers are among 776 jobs on the chopping block has department officials facing tough questions about how they plan to cope.

    “It’s a real shock it’s so many,” Green Party Leader Elizabeth May said, calling the cuts “wrong-headed.”

    “Show us where these 800 jobs are. Show us how you think the work can still be done. What I’m asking for is some transparency and some answers,” May said in an interview.

    “These are deep cuts into programs and services that are indispensable. They need to look at these programs and realize these are public safety questions,” May said, citing water monitoring and changing weather patterns as two examples.

  • Ozone watch faces Tory axe

    Environment Canada is planning to axe a monitoring network that is key to assessing Earth's protective ozone layer, according to a report in a leading science journal.

    The British journal Nature says scientists and research institutes around the world have been informally told the Canadian network will be shut down as early as this winter, putting an end to continuous ozone measurements that go back 45 years.

    "People are gobsmacked by this decision," Thomas Duck, an atmospheric researcher at Dalhousie University, said in an interview with Postmedia News.

  • Four more Ontario coal fired plants shut down

    Under attack for soaring hydro bills, the Ontario government struck back Friday by announcing the shutdown of four more coal-fired energy generating units.

    Speaking from the Ontario Lung Association headquarters in Toronto, Energy Minister Brad Duguid said two of eight coal-fired units at the Nanticoke station and two of four at the Lambton plant have closed. Shutting them down is the pollution-clearing equivalent of removing up to 2 million cars from the road.

  • Canada to slash environment ministry jobs

    OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canada's environment ministry will cut or reassign around 10 percent of its workers, unions said on Thursday, prompting fears that services like weather forecasting and environmental protection will suffer.

    Officials said the move was designed to help eliminate the budget deficit. Critics said it underscored what they portray as the right-leaning Conservative government's contempt for the environment.
